We come to the end of my German journey with a wander through the Berlin of Bertolt Brecht, playwright and author of pieces such as “The Threepenny Opera” and “Mother Courage.” He’s perhaps most famous for two quotes, one from a play: “First eat, then morals”, and then much later, as he was in East Germany during the uprisings in the 1950s, “perhaps the government should dissolve the people and elect another.” Of course, his copyrights and revenue were safely ensconced in Switzerland…
Also a brief tour of the cemetery, Dorotheenstädtischer Friedhof, with Mann, Marcuse, Wolf, and others from German literature.
