Last year for my birthday I took the Coast Starlight train from LA to Portland, Oregon. Obviously I was dressed in my favorite Harajuku Girl costume.
While I was only there for a fast 48 hours, I think I saw a good bit of the flavor of the city, from a distillery near the Pearl District to the original Voodoo Donuts.

There is an interesting tie-in between Portland and San Francisco: why did the US need to take over California if we already had the Oregon Country and access to the Pacific? Probably something to do with the lack of a harbor directly on the sea, as opposed to miles upriver. Just a theory.
